The Design
In this vintage-style Christian t-shirt, the Tree of Knowledge is in full bloom, and its fruit glows. Adam and Eve sit at the base, heads bowed, faces lit by the screens in their hands. The serpent coils around the trunk and watches. Golden cords run from the phones down into the roots, past toppled temples, a crown, a globe, a stack of books, and a row of gravestones. Every empire of knowledge ends up down there. Only the deer is looking up.
Consider This
“When the woman saw that the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eyes, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom, she took the fruit and ate it.” — Genesis 3:6 (BSB)
The serpent never offered Eve something ugly. He offered her something useful, beautiful, and smart. Knowledge was the bait, and the hook was the idea that she could have it without God.
Today we carry the whole tree in our pocket: every fact, every opinion, every scroll that never ends. Information is not the problem. Mistaking information for wisdom is. We can know everything and still be lost.
That is why the next thing God does is so tender. Adam and Eve hide, and He comes looking for them:
“But the LORD God called out to the man, ‘Where are you?’” — Genesis 3:9 (BSB)
It was not a question about location services. God already knew. It was an invitation to come out from behind the leaves. Jesus came with the same heart: “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10, BSB). Wisdom was never a fruit we could pick. It was always a Person we are invited to walk with.
So look up now and then, like the deer. The glow will wait. Most of what matters was here the whole time.
Consider: What would change if you answered God’s question, “Where are you?”, before you checked your phone tomorrow morning?
A thoughtful conversation starter for anyone who loves Scripture, notices the times we live in, and could stand to scroll a little less. (Ourselves very much included.)
Look up. He’s still calling.
