ABIES EMMANUELIS — The Christmas Tree, Reconsidered.
More than a Christmas tradition. A story rooted in Scripture.
The Design
Inspired by 19th-century naturalist drawings, this vintage botanical field-guide illustration features an intricately engraved evergreen with a wooden cross at its heart, and five biblical connections hidden within a familiar Christmas symbol:
✦ THE STAR — A star shall come out of Jacob. (Numbers 24:17)
✦ THE LIGHTS — Jesus is the light of the world. (John 8:12)
✦ THE EVERGREEN — Like a tree planted by streams of water, whose leaf does not wither. (Psalm 1:3)
✦ THE TRUNK — He bore our sins in His body on the tree. (1 Peter 2:24)
✦ THE ROOTS — A shoot shall come forth from the stump of Jesse. (Isaiah 11:1)
Consider This
“Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).
— Matthew 1:23 (BSB)
Abies is the botanical name for the firs. Emmanuelis means “of Emmanuel.” Put them together, and you get Emmanuel’s tree.
The Christmas tree is easy to look right past. It’s just part of December. But every piece of it can point to the One the season is about: a star for the King, lights for the Light of the world, evergreen life that doesn’t wither, and roots reaching back to Jesse, King David’s father.
And at the center of this tree stands a cross. The baby in the manger was born to die on a tree, and to rise again. Immanuel means God didn’t stay at a distance. He came all the way down, and all the way to the cross.
Consider: What familiar part of Christmas could you look at more closely this year?
A thoughtful Christmas gift for believers, pastors, Bible teachers, theology enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates meaningful Christian artwork.
